Né en 1957 à Chicago, IL, Dan Witz a assisté à la Cooper Union dans l'East Village de New York.


En 1982, il a reçu une bourse de la NEA et en 1992 et 2000 des bourses de la New York Foundation for the Arts. Son premier livre, "The Birds of Manhattan", a été publié en 1983 par Skinny Books. En 2010, une monographie, "Dan Witz, InPlain View, 30 Years of Artworks Illegal and Otherwise", a été publiée par Gingko Press. Parmi ses expositions individuelles, citons la Semaphore Gallery NY (1985,1986), Clementine Gallery (1996), StolenSpace Gallery à Londres (2007, 2016), DFN Gallery NY (2003, 2005-2008, 2010), Carmichael Gallery, L.A. Vive et travaille à Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Dan Witz crée ses œuvres entre l’art urbain et l’atelier.
