Nick Walker is one of the most famous street artists in the world. Born in 1969, he comes from the Bristol avant-garde graffiti and street-art scene of the early 1980s.
As a precursor to the British graffiti phenomenon, Nick Walker and Banksy's work has become a model for hundreds of emerging artists. His work is constantly evolving and always innovative, modern and challenging.
Nick Walker relies on the energy and imagery of graffiti but he manages to combine the freedom it provides with a perfect mastery of Stencil. The results are very sophisticated and the rendering admirable. The methods he uses retain their strength and integrity on the traditional support of the canvas.
Nick Walker's immediately recognizable style and humour have earned him worldwide recognition. In 2008, Nick Walker's soloshows were sold out in Los Angeles and London, where collectors waited more than 24 hours to be among the first to obtain one of the latest editions (screen printing and lithography). In 2008, its iconic Mona Lisa was sold more than ten times its estimated auction value at Bonhams.
"In 1992, I began to combine stencils with my freehand work, which allowed me to juxtapose quasi-photographic images with the crudeness of conventional graffiti. The stencils had a strong impact on my work. The advantage of stencils is that they allow me to take an image from anywhere (dissect a part of life) and recreate it on any surface. I try to add a humorous or ironic element to some paintings and add a little relief and light to the walls. Painting is a form of escape for me and if my work allows the viewer to do the same thing, then I am satisfied. »
